Minute 34

 Minute 34 (by Lena Geyer)

In the original minute, we see mourning people. They cry and comfort each other. A door

opens, and we see other people looking at something or somebody. I instantly thought that

somebody must have died; somebody much loved. The door closes, and next, we see a young

woman lying in bed like she just passed away. (When we watched my minute in class, Mr.

Herzogenrath told me that the hand on the left does not touch her arm but a prosthesis which I

did not realize until this very moment).

I changed the music because I think Jonny Mathis’ “The Twelfth of Never” fits perfectly to

describe how much it hurts to lose somebody you love deeply. I like to think that the woman’s

spirit recaps life and the moments that were truly beautiful even if they seemed insignificant

or were taken for granted like a mother’s smile, fireworks or nature. I tried to create

something like a jar of memories to underline that even the smallest memories are worth

cherishing. I asked myself: “What do you see when you think about your life?”. Also, some of

the short clips I included are filmed in top form (in Hochformat), which underlines their

spontaneity, and at the same time, how important and beautiful such small/short moments can

be. However, everything eventually ends someday: A child will grow up, love will fade away,

and every pizza will be eaten at some point. Therefore, one could see my minute as the

beginning of a circle (the circle of life), implying that after life comes death, after death

comes life..., but I decided to focus on the bright side of life: truly beautiful moments that

make you happy.
