Minute 15

Minute 15 (by Praneeth Rasia)

Explanatory Note Minute 15

In this video I wanted to capture my thoughts and feelings that I had during the first few times I watched the original minute. The whole minute shows monastery children walking while they are being watched by nuns. I associated it with something scary and mysterious. The  more I watched the minute the more I focused on what seems to be a gate turning black and white over and over again. It appeared almost like an (divine) eye watching. That combined with longer sequences in which children were constantly walking created a feeling of hypnosis and madness. The whole setting and given that the place looks like a giant cross after the children left it gave it also a religious touch. In the end I was wondering where the children are heading off to. So what I did was trying to capture the mysterious feeling and madness by adding certain sounds to sequences that transmit exactly these emotions it in de beginning. By adding the sequence of the cross-like place fading into fire I wanted to create the impression that that place or where they are going to is hell. The lyrics of the music I chose also underline the religious aspect. Afterwards I wanted to revers the sequence and fade in something that looked like clouds or water to give it all an easier, more light-hearted feeling to also symbolize the opposite of hell. In the end, I used a snippet of Mariah Carey’s Song fantasy to destroy the whole mysterious feeling the video transmits, not only by the sound but also by the meaning of the lyrics. This is supposed to be a parallel to my thoughts, because in the end I thought to myself that all I have been imagining is just something in my head. Further I also wanted to make it seem as if what happens is, what the observing nun imagines, rather than reality.
