Minute 01

Minute 01 (by Asena Günes)

I really liked my first minute. My initial reaction was an overwhelming sense of warmth and fuzziness, but also nostalgia, reminiscent of my childhood. I remember how Dervishes were a common spectacle at Turkish weddings. My mother would always gently place her arm around me, elucidating the spiritual meaning of their rotations. The spinning reminds me of the wheel of time. Back then, when we all sat together at those weddings, my grandma and grandpa were still there and everything was still alright, and we were still complete. I miss them, their absence hurts…

The finished product serves as a manifestation of these emotions. It symbolizes the comfort I find in my mother's embrace to this day. The continuously circling Dervish represents not only the relentless passage of time but also the cycles that encapsulate both joy and loss. The circles in my work symbolize the relentless march of time, while also alluding to the inevitable blur of memories as time advances.
